I just returned from a very fun, yet extremely short trip to Canandaigua, NY. I was very honored to be the voice over actor guest of honor at this very new anime convention called Ryu-Kon. Canandaigua is located about 45 minutes outside of Rochester, NY in the Finger Lakes area. The hotel the con was held in was the Inn on the Lake. It was a gorgeous location and the weather was perfect. I loved that it had a little sand bar attached where people would party into the late evening.
Because it was a brand new convention, the organizers, Bev, Dylan, and family decided to hold it Sunday only, but got a nice turn out for their first time out. I came in from Los Angeles on the Red Eye Friday night and landed Saturday morning. I immediately did lunch and a delicious Mexican restaurant and went sight seeing at a fabulous historic garden and mansion, with Dylan’s mom. We later had dinner with my hosts at the Cheesecake Factory.
On Sunday I did my voice over panel in the afternoon, slept part of the early evening and flew back at 5am on Monday. Needless to say I was a little bit wiped out and wished I could have hung out at the lake all summer long because it was so pretty and relaxing. I know the group was a little frustrated by the way the hotel handled certain things such as getting things set up on time, but I’m sure they had never experienced an anime convention before. They mostly do weddings and other types of events. Hopefully the convention and the hotel will work things out for next year. In the meantime, Ryu-kon will be looking at other options.
Everyone I met at the con was extremely gracious and fun to be around. I’m glad they asked me to participate. I have to say, I love my little mini-trips. If you would like to have me as a guest at your convention, or have a question about voice acting please feel free to contact me here.
