I have worked as a voice over actor for over 30 years for cartoons, film, commercials, and TV. I’m very familiar with using a microphone. As a person who is no longer 20, the idea of showing my face in a video is rather alarming. Using audio as a marketing tool is much more forgiving if you know what I mean. Many people enjoy listening to business tips as well as reading them.
My specialty in voice over is kid voices, so it’s sometimes a challenge when I am attempting to sound like I know what I’m doing. I usually have to announce that I am not 12 years old. However, if you Google tutorials on Youtube, it is not uncommon for a 12-year-old to do a How-To video. Some kids are better at giving instructions than their elders. LOL
If you want to add audio to your Word Press blog, there are several ways to do it. Audio clips and podcasting are great marketing tools.
Create clean sound
No matter what format you choose, be careful not to smack your lips. For some of us, with a sensitivity to odd sounds, lip-smacking is as grating to listen to as chalk screeching on a chalkboard. I hear it all the time on audios and videos. It drives me nuts. The solution: Take a drink of water before you speak and, if you need to, take breaks every once in a while to wet your whistle. Newscasters smack their lips all the time. Unfortunately, the news is live and cannot be edited out. Eating slices of Granny Smith apples helps also. Don’t ask me why. It just does.
To easily record and create an MP3 recording file on your own, download an editing software program called Audacity. For those with a MAC, you are lucky to be able to use Garage band. Audacity will convert your recordings into MP3 files. To do this, Audacity must have an element called LAME installed as well. The latest Audacity downloads include LAME, but make sure it is installed when you download it. Audacity is a pretty straightforward and easy to use audio editor. It has the ability to let you add separate tracks if you would like to add music.
It pays to have a decent microphone if you are serious about recording audio on a regular basis. I use the Audio Technica 2020 Studio Microphone Package which runs just over $100 on Amazon. A Behringer Xeneyx mixing board will connect the mic to your computer and allow you to adjust the sound quality. The advantage of having a home studio setup is that the sound quality will be much better than your computer mic and you can get very creative. Be careful not to set the gain too high and eliminate as much background noise as possible. If your recording sounds clean when you play it back, it will probably sound good online. A voice over actor invented a product called a Porta-booth Pro, which is a small padded box that you can record in anywhere you go. It is quite ingenious and is used by many voice-over performers.
There are websites that allow you to record on your phone like Anchor, which lets you record and publish podcasts on your phone. I like to record and edit my audio and use a Word Press widget plugin called Blubrry Power Press to post it on my site. Many players and audio upload sites like Libsyn have the capacity to send your podcast feed to Itunes. You have to sign up for an Itunes account. Start your own show via RSS from your blog.
Blog Talk Radio
Blog Talk Radio is a fabulous site for people who want to create their own radio shows using their phone that are broadcast over the Internet. Sign up for free to try it out. You can upgrade to a premium account if you get serious about it, but the free accounts are very functional and send traffic to your blog.
If you are not fond of writing blog posts, audio and video are excellent ways to communicate. However, since Google can’t crawl audio or video, it is important to add some text to your post such as a description of what your audio or video is about integrated with important keywords. You can also hire a freelancer to transpose your audios and videos.
